Prosecutor Receives $90,000 Grant to Continue Crime Victims’ Program
Prosecutor Randall K. Gaylord announced today that the Prosecutor’s Office has been awarded a $90,000 grant with the possibility of extensions for the following two years to provide assistance to victims of crime. The money is provided under the federal Victims of Crime Act and is distributed by the state of Washington on a competitive basis. "This grant will help so many people. I am pleased and grateful that we were successful," said Gaylord.
The money will be used to fund two positions in our office under the Victim Services Program. The staff's primary responsibility is looking out for the needs of victims of crime and to make sure that the victim receives the help that they need, whether that be counseling, a protection order, a chance to be heard in court, or fair repayment for the losses caused by the crime.
"While much of our work involves property crimes, these positions really make a difference in cases involving personal injury and especially crimes against children and women," said Gaylord.
"First and foremost, we listen. Our Victim Services' staff will provide advice on how victims and their loved ones can stay safe. In addition, we will also use the funds to provide emergency support, like changing locks, repairing broken doors or windows, or providing cell phones," added Gaylord.
Karen E. Kunde directs the Victim Services Program in the Prosecutors Office. Karen and Elizabeth Pillow, Victim Services Program Analyst, work closely in cooperation with the San Juan County Sheriff and community service organizations such as DV/SAS of the San Juans.
