As of January 9, 2006, San Juan County is composed of six districts. Each Council
Member is elected to represent you from the district in which they reside. They
are elected by the the voters of their District ONLY (not countywide), and hold
four-year staggered terms. The Council meets on Tuesdays as well as other special
meeting days. Agendas and Minutes for the Board of County Commissioners through
December 20, 2005 and for the County Council from January, 2006 forward, are available
here, or from the link
provided at the left. They are also published weekly in the local newspaper and
are posted in the County Courthouse.
The Council Members' main roles:
- They serve as the legislative authority of the County,
- They approve annual County budgets,
- They are responsible for County property and funds,
- They may sit as a land use appellate body,
- They provide for County infrastructure, roads and buildings,
- They fix the amount of County taxes according to law,
- They act as the County franchising authority.
Funds for the County come from various sources such as:
- Property taxes
- Local optional sales taxes
- Lodging Taxes and special levies
- Licenses and permits
- State and federal grants
- Fees for services
- Fines and forfeitures
Some of the income sources are for use in specific departments while others go into
the general fund for disbursement by the Council.
The Council appreciates hearing from their constituents. You can direct individual
