With Orcas Island roots tracing back almost 70 years, Council member Rick Hughes’ entire life has revolved around San Juan County.

 Prior to moving full time to Orcas, Rick was an executive with ESPN.com and one of the first online advertising sales executives with clients ranging from Nike, Microsoft and Electronic Arts.

He is a National Outdoor Leadership School graduate and former national board member of Outward Bound Wilderness; combining his passion for youth education in wilderness environments, farm to table sustainability and local produce for local schools.

Rick’s executive background coupled with his duties as owner of Ray's Pharmacy and General Store, highlights Rick’s ability to lead the county with both strategic vision and tactical hands-on experience.

He helped develop the San Juan Country Drug Take-Back Program, runs a property management group and volunteers his time having served on the Orcas Island Farmers Market Association, San Juan County Ag Guild, Eastsound Water Users Association, and as a Board Member of the Eastsound Planning and Review Committee. In addition he volunteers as a Little League coach and currently serves as the Parent Teacher/Student Association (PTSA) Co-President.

With more than 20 years of business experience working with national companies to six years of operational experience running Ray’s Pharmacy, Rick felt it was time to get involved and give back to the community.
