Biography

In 1990 Bill Watson began visiting the San Juan Islands with friends and family. Slowly falling in love with the area, he became a full-time resident of Friday Harbor in 2006.

Watson has led a gypsy’s life; he’s moved residences 15 times, stood in 49 of our 50 states, and traveled the globe for business and pleasure. Bill was born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, returning three more times including graduating from Moon Township High School. A graduate of Ohio State University, Bill earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree in 1979.

Bill started his high-tech career in San Jose California as a software engineer and moved to Redmond Washington in 1988. Watson worked for a wide variety of firms, from a corporate 500 company to a 4-person startup in a friend’s basement.  After downsizing his life, he semi-retired from the “corporate world” in 2005; continuing to work as a part-time contractor remotely from Friday Harbor for two Seattle area firms.

Engaged with the San Juan County community in several ways since 2006, Bill was the part-time Program Coordinator for the SJC Economic Development Council from 2007 through 2009. He was a member of the Leadership San Juan Islands Class of 2007.  Watson has also served on the boards of four local non-profits and was on the 2012 SJC Charter Review Commission.

Bill is a strong believer in local agriculture initiatives and stewardship of our environment. Bill has two adult children who live in the Seattle area. Bill currently lives in Hillview Terrace with his partner, Barbara.
