County prosecutors are elected officials because they have great discretion in the
charging and prosecution of crimes. Periodic elections assure that the prosecutors
fairly represent the community they serve. By working closely with the sheriff and
other law enforcement officials prosecutors protect people and protect property.
Criminal prosecution is specialized work. It requires technical knowledge of the
rules of investigating crimes, evidence, courtroom procedure, and criminal law.
