San Juan Island

County Parks Closed to Camping

By order of the San Juan County Council and in the best interest of the public and our staff, all four County Parks are closed to camping until May 30, 2020. This action was taken on Monday, March 23, in an effort to flatten the spread of COVID-19.

UPDATE: Further guidance has caused us to extend the prohibition on camping in the four County campgrounds. Individual camping reservations for arrival between now and June 30 at any of the four San Juan County Parks campgrounds will be cancelled with full refunds given. Please have patience with us, as we have many reservations to work though! No new reservations for these dates will be accepted until further notice. Also, there will be no group camping in any of the parks in 2020. We hope for all our camping to resume normal scheduling in 2021.

At the present time, Day Parks and day use are still open, though we ask all visitors to please follow CDC guidelines for 'social distancing'. Some restroom facilities may be closed and there will be no drinking water available in any of the parks. Visitors are encouraged to bring TP and hand sanitizer, as some of our supplies have been pilfered.

For mainland folks contemplating a visit to the San Juans during this pandemic, including day trips, please do not! This is not the time to risk further spread of this disease. The health and safety of our island communities is our highest priority. The request is based on San Juan County Health officials' recommendations and Washington State Governor Jay Inslee's statewide order for everyone to stay home for two weeks beginning March 25.

We appreciate your understanding and efforts to keep our communities safe from the spread of this viral infection.

Hammock Tents not allowed at San Juan County Park

Hammock Tents are not allowed in San Juan County Park (San Juan Island) campsites. While we recognize that some manufacturers are prudent in their design and application and respectful of the environment, there are many who are not. Other traditional tents are, of course, still allowed in any of our park campsites. Hammock tents are allowed in specified sites at Odlin and Shaw County Parks; please use the designated trees. If in doubt, ask Park staff. When reserving your campsite, please read the campsite description carefully and select a site appropriate for your camping equipment.

Vessel Launch Permit Policy for San Juan County Park suspended for 2020

The annual program that has operated from the 2nd Friday in May through the last Sunday in September, requiring all vessel operators launching from San Juan Park with the intention of leaving the immediate cove area to have a valid permit has been suspended for 2019. It is expected that all vessel operators familiarize themselves with best practices for vessel operations around endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales and other marine life. You can learn more on this topic from Be Whale Wise.
