County Council Adopts Shoreline Master Program (SMP) Update
Thank you for your interest and engagement during the SMP update process. San Juan County updated its SMP in accordance with the state Shoreline Management Act with the overall goal of preventing inherent harm during development of the state’s shorelines.
On September 19, 2017, County Council held a public hearing, deliberated on public comments and adopted Ordinance 11-2017. This ordinance amends the SMP update Ordinance 1-2016. Adoption of the 2017 ordinance and the local publication of the notice of its adoption on October 4 completes the local adoption phase of the update.
Ordinance 11-2017 was submitted to the Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) on October 4, 2017, for their approval and publication of a notice of decision. The updated SMP includes goals, policies, shoreline regulations and shoreline designation maps that will take effect fourteen days from the date of Ecology’s written notice of final action to the County. Ecology’s written notice is typically issued on the same day as the publication in the newspaper of record.
Applicants currently considering shoreline development projects in the near future are advised to review the adopted SMP ordinances. The effective date of the updated SMP is not yet available; however, it will be announced as soon as possible.
There is a sixty (60) day appeal period that begins on the day that Ecology issues its approval.
